KUSUM GONGDUE LINEAGE

Terton Pedgyl Lingpa

A convergence of sutras, tantras and pure vision was established in “The Land of Snow” by Dharma King Trisong Detsen together with Indian master Shantarakshita, the great master Padmasambhava as well as hundred and eight scholars and translators in 8th century. In particular, the threefold precious yoga practice of the inner Tantra was first commissioned to Nyak Janakumara, then to Nubchen Sangay Yeshey and finally to Zurpoche. Among these, Nubchen Sangay Yeshey received the transmission of the precious inner yoga practice from Padmasambhava the second Buddha and Vimalamitra the crown of five-hundred Pandits and other lineages, which then converged on to a single lineage, as if numerous rivers flow into a great ocean.

For the benefit of future generations, Guru Padmasambhava concealed 108 major, treasured doctrines and 1008 minor, treasured doctrines. He further prophesied that the treasure discoverers will appear in succession and discover innumerable treasure doctrines, as a result of which all fortunate disciples will attain enlightenment within a life time.

Among the prophesied treasure discoverers was Nubchen Sangay Yeshey, who was one of the main disciples of the nine, heart sons of Guru Rinpoche. He reincarnated thirteen times successively as a treasure discoverer, and of which the last reincarnation was in the form of Ugyen Tsa sum Lingpa, also known as Garwang Rigzin Namchak Dorji, who was renowned for discovering more than 72 profound treasured doctrines.

Tsa sum Lingpa travelled extensively to every part of Tibet and liberated countless sentient beings in the same spirit wich Guru Padasambhava did. Hence, Nubchen is well known as the king of all Tantric masters at that time. Moreover, he is considered the most significant figure in the Buddhist world as he became the master of both the Kama and the Terma teachings. He was also able to win over the evils like Langdharma by means of wrathful Mantra, bringing back the precious ancient teachings of the Nyingma lineage to flourish once again like the smooth course of the Ganges. Therefore, owing to his gracious, benevolent acts, the precious secret mantra teachings still exist intact, bearing the power of spiritual blessings.

Then, Terton Padgyal Lingpa(1924 -1988) who was the emanation of Guru Rinpoche and Nubchen, continued as Namchak Tsasumlingpa's reincarnation and discovered the remaining treasure of Namchak Tsasum Lingpa known as Kusum Gongdue. He was born in wood- rat year 15th Rabjung cycle of Tibetan, 1924, at Golok serta of Dho Kham region among the clan of Chok tsang of Mukpo clan, in Tibet, to the father Pema Jigmed and mother Sherab Tshomo with very auspicious signs. From childhood he was very extraordinary he could perform all of the tantric rituals even while he was playing. He had the great visions of Nubchen and Countless deities in his life.

It was prophesied by Padmasambhava: "Final birth of Great Nubchen, the master of the treasure, will appear with the name of lotus, for the glory of sentient beings." So at the time of the rapid occurrence of the five degenerations, Nubchen, according to the prophecy, compassionately emanated as the great treasure discoverer Terton Pedgyal Lingpa, who was blessed by the origin of his emanation, which is Nubchen himself in body, speech and mind, making him inseparable. Moreover, he also received the pure vision from Guru Padmasambhava and many other wisdom deities, who prophesied that Pedgyal Lingpa will discover the treasured doctrines from various natural locations such as underground, lakes, and the sky, benefiting countless disciples resulting in their liberation by his sublime action in the process.

As prophesied by Padmasambhava, he discovered the final profound treasure of Namchak Tsasum Lingpa known as the Kusum Gongdue (gathering of three Kayas' intention) at the hidden land of Padma Kod in the present day Aurunachal Pradesh and Bhutan with various, great miraculous signs. These treasures were concealed for twenty four years through wisdom dakini’s secret seal. Thereafter, as the prophesied time arrived and on the appeal of the Dharma protectors, he decoded the treasured doctrine into the Tibetan text from the secret letter of wisdom Dakinis corresponding to his three years of strict retreat at the Kurtoe Neren Sengay Dzong (Padmasambhava's main holy site of action). Then he passed on the treasures to his Dharma heirs to further spread them for the welfare of the beings.

Although he dissolved his body into Dharmakaya very shortly after the Kusum Gongdue translation in 1988, he transferred the treasured doctrines to the prophesied and fortunate heart sons with his clear wisdom mind and blessed them to hold the teachings. As a result, these profound teachings, like the gentle rays of the sun, spread all over the world without interruption even to these days, through the threefold means of adherence, promotion and dissemination. Mostly due to the noble vision and unsurpassed action of the prophesied lineage holder such as H.H. the 6th Gochen Tulku Namchak Sang-ngag Tenzin Rinpoche , his treasured doctrine has not only inspired and liberated countless disciples of Bhutan, but also many others in the western and eastern worlds like Tibet, India, Nepal, Taiwan, Hongkong, Singapore, America, Brazil, Germany etc. Many of them have formed the Namchak Kusum Gongdue association in their respective countries and implemented the treasured doctrine as their main practice of attaining the benefits of temporary bliss and ultimate liberation.

Gochen Tulku Sang-ngag Rinpoche is the founder and spiritual director of Ewam International Centers around the world. Born into one of the oldest families in Tibet, which eventually came to be known under the name Namchak, or “sky iron,” in an area called Chamdo in the Kham region of Tibet in 1952, Rinpoche was recognized in early childhood by the great rimé lama Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö [1893-1959], as well as by the former Zigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, to be the reincarnation of the Gochen Tulku. The third and fourth incarnations of great tertön Tsasum Lingpa were successively reborn into the Namchak family, which was responsible for maintaining the local monastery of Namchak Ritrö, the historical hermitage of Tsasum Lingpa, located in Chumbo. Therefore Sang-ngag’s family had high hopes that he was the 5th reincarnation of Tsasum Lingpa. To their dismay, however, he himself insisted he was actually the Gochen Tulku, and it was soon thereafter that he was formally recognized and confirmed as the 6th incarnation of Gochen Tulku. It was Tsasum Lingpa who first predicted and named the site for Gochen Monastery, which was then built by the first Gochen Tulku, Gyalwa Gyatso.

Near the mere age of three, when Rinpoche was with his family and a large group of others harvesting hay in the fields, he was left sitting on a boulder at the foot of a cliff, where he imparted the wondrous sign of his realization by leaving his footprint in a rock, as though in soft clay, still visible to this day, Tulku Sang-ngag Rinpoche, an outstanding meditation master and scholar, is a lineage holder of the Namchak lineage and other profound and widely practiced lineages of Tibetan Buddhism.

Rinpoche is also widely regarded as a master stupa builder. He has established Turquoise Leaf, a practice center for Tibetan nuns in Nepal. Rinpoche’s vision of a peace garden in a mountainous valley came to him as a small child, eventually leading him to Montana to build the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas. His primary residence is in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he established a retreat and practice center, Pema Khandro Ling.
